1. Tanah Lot
Perhaps Bali's most iconic image — an ancient sea temple perched on a rocky outcrop surrounded by crashing waves. Best visited at sunset when the silhouette against the orange sky is truly magical. Located in Tabanan, about one hour from Seminyak.
2. Pura Besakih (Mother Temple)
The holiest and largest temple complex in Bali, sitting on the slopes of Mount Agung at 1,000 metres above sea level. The complex contains 23 separate temples and is the spiritual center of Balinese Hinduism. Arrive early to avoid crowds and bring a sarong.
3. Uluwatu Temple
Dramatically situated on a 70-metre cliff at the southern tip of the Bukit Peninsula, Uluwatu offers breathtaking ocean views. Don't miss the famous Kecak Fire Dance performed here every evening at sunset.
4. Tirta Empul
Known as the holy spring temple, Tirta Empul in Tampaksiring is where Balinese Hindus come for ritual purification. You can participate in the melukat purification ritual yourself — wade through the sacred spring pools fed by a natural mountain spring believed to have healing powers.
5. Pura Luhur Batukaru
Hidden in the rainforest on the slopes of Mount Batukaru, this misty jungle temple feels untouched and deeply sacred. One of Bali's six key directional temples, it remains far less visited than the others.
6. Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave)
Dating back to the 11th century, this archaeological site near Ubud features a cave carved with demonic faces, ancient bathing pools, and meditation niches.
7. Pura Taman Ayun
A royal temple built in 1634 surrounded by a wide moat, Taman Ayun in Mengwi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The multi-tiered meru towers reflected in the still water create a perfect mirror image.
8. Pura Ulun Danu Beratan
Floating on the shores of Lake Beratan in the cool highlands of Bedugul, this stunning water temple dedicated to the goddess of lakes and rivers appears to float on the water during high water season.
9. Pura Kehen
The state temple of the Bangli kingdom, Pura Kehen is carved into a hillside with an impressive 11-tiered meru pagoda and ancient Chinese porcelain plates embedded in the walls.
10. Saraswati Temple (Ubud)
Right in the heart of Ubud town, this beautiful lotus pond temple dedicated to the goddess of knowledge and arts is one of Bali's most photographed. Traditional dance performances are held here regularly.
Practical Tips
Always wear a sarong and sash when entering temple grounds — most temples provide rental sarongs at the entrance. Be respectful, speak quietly, and follow the guidance of local staff.
